Your parents would have had a very different experience from what you are having these days. When they finished school, they simply decided what they wanted to study and then got a job in that field after graduating.

As I am sure you will have found out so far, that is no longer the case. Getting a university degree is no longer the single 100% guarantee of a future job that it once was. Yes, having a university degree means you are a better employment prospect and stand a better chance at long-term success, but the fact of the matter is that there are more graduates than there are jobs today.
